Network Connectivity (Wireless)

This quick little HowTo contains the basics of what one needs in order to connect a computer or handheld device to the Morehouse network wirelessly (via 802.11b). For more thorough documentation, check out http://support.morehouse.edu/. Details on how to configure your particluar client should be available from your vendor or from a quick Googling for "wireless config windows" or "wireless config macintosh" or the like.

Required Stuff

Pretty much any laptop computer purchased new within the last 5 years will do. Many PocketPC type devices will work as well.

The computer or gizmo must have an 802.11b or 802.11g interface. Many new devices have these built in, but they're also available as add-on cards for most portable devices and desktop computers. Our network uses 802.11b and 802.11g signals.

In order to use the wireless network, your device *must* be in a place where the wireless signal exists. That information is here.

Computer Setup

To use the Morehouse wireless network, configure your device to talk to SSID (wireless network name) "Morehouse", no encryption, and tell it to get all of its IP information automatically by DHCP.

In most cases, the device will do this unless you tell it otherwise, so if you have a new device, just enable wireless networking and see what happens. It should work.

What You May Connect

Nothing in this document comments on permission to hook a computer or other device to the network; that information lives on the main support site. In general, computers and hand-held computer-like things are OK, and everything else is not. Some items are strictly forbidden, so make sure you know the rules before getting into the game.
